Biography Britta Schmitt

d20_3274_bs_kleinBritta Schmitt began her musical education at age six, receiving guitar lessons from her mother. She soon took up the cello as her second instrument, with which she became a member, and later, Principal Cellist with the Euregio Youth Symphony Orchestra. In her younger years, Britta also played cello with the Euregio Chamber Orchestra.

After Secondary School, Britta began studying Education with specialisation in music, and was awarded a high commendation upon completing her final exams. During this time, she was also a member of the Münster Student Orchestra, and was selected by the Jeunesse Musicale for a three-week tour to Ecuador, to perform with the National Youth Orchestra there.

In 2002, she began her music studies in guitar at the Musikhochschule Köln with Professor Hubert Käppel. In the same year, she received the Prize for Young Talent from the City of Wesel.
This led to masterclasses with Manuel Barrueco, David Russell, Aniello Desiderio, Carlo Marchione, Pavel Steidl and the Brothers Assad, as well as concerts and recitals in Switzerland, the Netherlands, Spain and Germany.

In October 2003, she performed concerts in Brazil as a guest-student of the Koblenz Guitar Academy, as part of the concert series, “Young Artists in Concert”. Furthermore she played live on Brazilian television to an audience of millions.

In 2004, Britta was awarded a DAAD-Scholarship for a two-week Master-Course with Andreas von Wangenheim in Locarno. During the 2004-05 academic year, she studied with Professor Zoran Dukic
at the Escola Superior de Musica de Catalunya in Barcelona. Whilst receiving training in Chamber Music with the composer Feliu Gasull, she met the guitarist Carles Guisado, with whom she later formed Duo Joncol.
Britta Schmitt was an award-recipient at the Twents Gitaar Festival in 2006. She completed her music studies in Köln in July 2007 with a high distinction, and, in 2009, her Post-Graduate studies in Solo Performance.
